Dr. Garriott wore 2 Seiko A829 models on the 1983 STS-9 Space-lab mission, he had both versions - A829-6019 (SMGG11) and A829-6029 (SMGG13).
The defined Seiko watches are not in any way be construed "assigned" or selected by NASA, and were only "personal" choices made by the astronauts themselves.
Seiko A829 models are the only ones that have flown on the shuttle orbiters. The 8-sided black/red can also be seen in the 1986 movie Space Camp, worn by Lea Thompson.
A unique rotary switch allows immediate selection of desired mode, which is indicated on the rotating bezel. Continuous readout in hours, on a 12 or 24-hour basis, minutes, seconds, day and date with AM/PM indicator. Month is displayed in time-seeing mode. A second digital time zone is displayed in hours and minutes. Calender automatically adjusts for odd and even months(except February of leap years). Two alarms can be set to ring daily at any designated AM or PM time and for hourly time signals, if desired. Chronograph with split time capability records elapsed time up to 12 hours in hours, minutes and seconds, with 1/100 seconds readout for initial 20 minutes. Timer mode indicates time remaining in a preset time period up to 100 minutes. Counter mode can record from 1 to 9999, or be used as two separate counters from 1 to 99 each. "Sports 100", water-tested to 300 ft. (100 meters), alarm test button, built-in illumination, HARDLEX mar-resistant crystal.
